The Cottage is ideal as a base for exploration and day-trips, with cities such as Edinburgh and Glasgow nearby. The near towns of Peebles, Moffat, and Biggar are known for their friendly and relaxed atmosphere, and are all within 25-30 minutes of the Cottage.

Edinburgh and surrounding area
The ancient city of Edinburgh, known as the "Athens of the North", is full of things to do, with everything from sailing, kart racing, ghost tours and shopping to keep you busy.
The city is renowned for its many famous museums and buildings, such as Edinburgh Castle, and the National Museum of Scotland. Art lovers can visit many collections throughout the city. All museums, except the Castle, are free of charge.

The modern city of Glasgow is perfect for a day out, and is full of things to do. The Science Museum is a hands on exhibition that's perfect for kids. The city is home to the world famous "Burrel Collection", which is home to many millions of pounds worth of art and antiques. There is also the "Mackintosh Museum", once home to the artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The city's vibrant night-life is perfect for eating out, and there is no shortage of choice.

The Cottage is less than 30 minutes away from Glentress, the premier mountain biking location in Scotland, and is free to use. Road cyclists can enjoy the beautiful scenery and quiet roads, as well as the interesting undulating roads. Walkers can enjoy any hill in the area, with the largest hill south of Edinburgh, Broad Law, just 5 minutes walk away.

England and the Lake District
If you wanted to journey down to the Lake District, you can do so in only two hours. There you can enjoy the renowned Lakes, and soak up some of the relaxed atmosphere. The English cities of Newcastle and Carlisle are also just under two hours away, and offer a world of activities.
